The church was built in 1810 by the villagers of Roșia Nouă and Obârșia, and it was dedicated to Saint Demetrius. The church was built with oak beams in the traditional style of the wooden churches in this area. The belfry was built with fir beams over the narthex and covered by a shingle roof, as the rest of the church. Another separate belfry hosts a bell bought in 1934. The church was renovated in 2010-2011.
